About

Our History

Opening in 1936 as “The Pink Pig,” this cafe was billed as “the smartest coffee shop West of Chicago!” At that time, Ottumwa offered over 30 eateries to serve the thriving downtown. Notable establishments were “The Koffee Kup,” “The Pantry,” “Kide’s Cafe,” “Nieswanger’s,” “Swenson Bakeries,” and “Dupies.” “Canteen Lunch in the Alley” is the only remaining link to Ottumwa’s gastronomic past. “The Pink Pig” closed in 1969, but saw many other ventures come and go since. In 1999, after a new front and remodeling, we reopened as the “2nd Street Cafe” – serving the best quality food with old-fashioned service makes us a popular choice for the entire family! Thanks for joining us and please become a frequent guest at our cafe!
